Hand embroidered pillow cover from Transylvania.
Stunning hand embroidered pillow cover from Transylvania. Bright red cotton on Linen.
The pillows are from the ethnically Hungarian Kalotaszeg region of Transylvania, presently in Romania. The embroidery method and stitch is called "írásos"
and was originally used to decorate the shoulder, the collar and the cuff of a women's shirt, and sometimes ran along the length of the sleeve. It was embroidered by the women themselves, of course. The brighter red was worn by younger women, while older women wore a darker red and then black.
